Diesel air lock

Postby transit-kate » Sat Jul 02, 2022 1:40 pm

Hi i am hoping someone can help me please.
I have had my mk6 2L FWD 2006 serviced in the week.
They fitted a new fuel filter that they say is Ford quality.
Now every day since my friend who knows very little is having to take of the fuel filter and has to top it up because it won't start.
So we are guessing an air leak. They won't look at it until end of next week.
Also sometimes he uses easy start to start it.
Do you think this can be an easy fix please,

Many thanks in advance

what make is filter? iirc mk6 and mk7 filters are slightly different so that may be the cause.
was filter on tight enough?
check hoses around filter one may have been knocked and letting in air.
is that rust spot new?

Adding to this...some aftermarket filters don't fit/seal the inlet too well and will allow air through.

Many thanks for your replies.
We have replaced the fuel filter & the housing as this was a simple job for us to do but it has not solved the problem.
I'm going to have to wait for the garage i think.
Once we get it started it has like a rough idle. Also if i go to boot it a little bit it seems to cut out and the diesel like flashes.
And also there is a bit of black smoke.

A couple weeks ago i had a FUEL PUMP INLET METERING VALVE fitted onto the pump & also the mass flo sensor tested. So it ain't those 2 things.
Also had the EGR valve cleaned.
We can't find any broken or split pipes either.

If i drive it normal like around 30 to 40 mph without booting it the it would run all day.
I over the weekend has spent a few hours on here & what a brill site. Thankyou .
So if the fuel is drawing back to the tank can that cause the black smoke & the rough idle & the cutting out & going into limp mode.
Maybe i have a tired pump. My mileage is around 140.000 and the history says the injectors were replaced @ 85.000 miles.

I'm going to do a sneaky one with the RAC this morning just to get the codes because the engine light is on. I will screenshot the codes and put them on here.
I'm begging for mercy guys as my holiday is in a couple weeks.

Many thanks in advance for your replies and you comments are much appreciated.

if you are unable to do a sneaky one with the rac, forscan is an easy way to do the codes yourself if you have a windows laptop it'll only cost around £20 for a modified elm-327 reader as the software for pc is free but its also available as a paid app on apple and android. a regular obd2 reader wont work as mk6 arent compatible with them.

the rough idle may be a dicky timing solenoid much cheaper than replacing the fuel pump.

but knobby1 is more well versed in mk6 goings on and would have a better idea on possible causes and fixes.

What hp rating is this transit..?? This FWD Mk6 wouldn't happen to be a 125ps TDCi would it...?? If it was a TDDi it wouldn't have the "fuel pump inlet metering valve" you mentioned.... Or is it actually a Mk7.?? 2006 was the changeover year.

Mk6's usually flash the glow plug light as a call for help, not throw an engine light....

Hi and thanks for the update.
I was waiting for an email from the guy i originally bought it from.
He believes it is a tdci mk6 130bh 2 litre.
He is not sure if it's the original engine.
I do have some codes though
p1211 & p0251.
Thanks in advance

There's no such animal as a 130 2.0L... Will be the 125ps... and if this is the case it will be the horrible TDCi engine....well know for having a fragile fuel system.

The fault codes you have point to a poorly FIP metering valve and possibly injectors will need looking at as "TheCake" has mentioned. Might pay to remove the fuel filter , cut it open and check for "sparkly bits".

Many thanks for you replies.
All sorted now.
New injectors fitted and had a bad connection somewhere.
Also engine is TDCI 125 BHP.
And was advised to get the bulb replaced in the clocks because what i thought was the managment light was is actually the diesel light.
Looks like someone has removed it or it to cover up something. I can't see that it's blown.

So my next question is does anyone know where the managment light bulb is. I Don't have a manual. MK6 Transit.

Once again many thanks. You were spot on

Battery charge light
Oil Pressure light
Spanner/Servicing light

Glow plug coil light

Thanks for the pic.
I can't see a mangement light.
Maybe it does only come on when there is a fault.

I don't think there is a management light on a Mk6, I believe that the glow plug light flashes when there's an engine fault. The one I can't remember may have been the ABS light

All lights that are relevant to your spec of van, should come on at 'ignition on' to test that they're working :)

The glow plug (coil) light is most certainly the engine management light, that evil little bugger has given me ptsd :( :x
