2004 with 2.4 Duratorq engine - problems to look for?

Postby ozshark » Sun Aug 07, 2022 3:02 am

Hi all,

Im considering purchasing an 04 transit with the 2.4 duratorq turbo diesel - Its going to be used as a campervan to tour australia so obviously needs to be reliable!

Can anyone advise on what are the common problems to watch out for ? It's apparently got 194,000kms on it.

Tossing up between this and the toyota hiace:)

As "TheCake" mentioned, if maintained well it should be fine....194k km is nothing for a diesel. Assuming it's a TDDi..?? If so they're very reliable. It's the TDCi's you may want to steer clear of. Dual mass flywheels can and do fail, but you'll here it rattle before it gives up.

Don't even think about a Toyota Hiace, although very reliable, they're essentially too small for a camper and the engine is near impossible to get at.

What year was TDCI Introduced? Wikipedia seems to suggest that all 04 models were TDCI.

Yes and no....the FWD 125 TDCi was released in May of 2002 while the RWD 135 TDCi was released in March of 2004.
