Water in fuel?

Postby Flowboy » Fri Oct 04, 2019 10:38 am

Hi all,
upgraded to a 2013 125ps transit earlier this year, proving to be good so far but...

What problems could be caused by running with "water in fuel"? (have done about 100 miles since this issue showed)
The van has run fine through the following;
On the motorway 2 days ago the water in fuel dash lamp came on. I stopped at the next services & drained a bit out of the filter as per handbook. Unfortunately dropped the plastic pot before I could check contents
Lamp stayed off for a few miles then came back on again.
Got to destination, drained filter again (about 100ml / 1/4 pint) but couldn't see any water in fuel
Lamp stayed off for a few miles & then came on again.
Should I completely drain the filter?
Is the sensor likely to be faulty?
I never had this problem with the 2007 85ps transit.

As there is no edit function on my post...

I have now read up on the potential very expensive damage to injectors (particularly common rail) that can be caused by water in fuel :shock:
I am now paranoid...

Seems there may be some chemical fuel treatments to "safely" remove water from systems.

Just to follow up on this, 4 years later.
After that initial water in fuel issue, the lamp has only come on a couple of times & both times went away of it's own accord before I could get to draining out the (non-existent?) water...

The earlier Mk7's had the WIF lamp often come on for no reason, I believe it was sorted in the 2012 PCM update. It even happend to the Transits which didn't even have the WIF sensor fitted.
