2011 FWD ALL TERRAIN TYRES.

Postby mtbcol1n » Tue Mar 21, 2023 12:18 am

Good evening all.
I'm thinking of putting a pair of all terrain tyres on the front to start with. The problem is I want to keep to the original tyre size (215/75/R16) but can only find 225/75/16. Does anyone know if the extra width would foul the bodywork and/or suspension on full lock?
I was particularly looking at Goodyear or Maxis.
Cheers.
Colin.

If the front tyres are a different "diameter" to the rears....you'll get ABS and Traction control faults and fault lights coming on and it may go into limp mode.

Thanks knobby

Rears would still be 16, just not all terrain pattern, and possibly 215 width not 225 width. But if you think that would cause problems as well, then I'll not bother.

The "width" isn't the issue, it's the aspect ratio, if both are the same aspect ratio but different widths, the diameter will be different.

For example...if one tyre is a 215/65/16 and the other is 225/65/16....they will be different diameters/circumferences. This is what causes the ABS/TC system to have a hissyfit.

225/75/16 should be fine, I think 235/75/16 is the biggest without fouling, some have fitted 245/75/16 but they foul slightly on full lock so some cut a bit of the plastic away.

Ahh, ok, got it so I'll need to fit the same size all round if I do go up a size, even if only the fronts are all terrain.
Thank you .

I found these, which would meet my needs. Would they he ok as they have a Q speed rating which is 100mph I think. Our van has a 70mph speed limiter.

They should be fine as they have a load rating of 113/111, it’s the load rating that matters more on vans.

Yep, thought they might be a tiny bit all terrain as in a little bit of mud? Can't find anything affordable in the size I need without changing all four. In any case they'll be better than the nearly worn out bog standards that are currently on the fronts.

Yep, you'll be fine if you do this....however, if the new tyres are different from the original sizes...the speedo will also read differently....the speedo reading is taken from the ABS system.

The tyres you link to should be good... as mentioned by our Ned.

With them being all season they’ll probably be a lot quieter on the road then all terrain, how often do you go in mud

Not that much really, only if a little off grid park up is a bit off the beaten track.
