Gearbox replacement question

Postby jamesoneil » Fri Jun 02, 2023 1:54 pm

Hi there,

I'm looking to get the gearbox changed in my mk7 rwd 2.4 07 transit and have some compatability questions.
To make things interesting the sticker on the side of my gearbox is completely worn and i can only make out '???? 7003 BB' i've seen two imprints on the gearbox as well. one showing 4C1R-7006 and another showing 4C1R-7K400.
After looking around for a replacement i've become a bit confused with which gearboxes are compatible, sorry if this seems somewhat obvious i'm not so mechanically minded. I've seen all manner of options for mk7 rwd 6 spd , 8C1R7003BB, 8C1R7003BA, CC1R7003BB, some with the same codes but from 2012 models (they look a touch different on the external castings but do they work with my 2007?) etc.

Do i need to find something that is an absolute exact match (van year, code numbers etc) or is there some leeway?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
James

All Mk7 MT-82 gearboxes are essentially identical, there were some minor changes to seals, castings and linkage bushings etc...but nothing major. You should be able to fit up any Mk7 Mt-82 box.

The last two letters of the part number are essentially "revision numbers".

Physical differences between older and newer MT82 Gbox's are bolts through the bell housing.
The top two bolts are longer (makes it easier to get to when in the van)
And the bottom two bolts are screwed from the opposite side. (heads on engine side rather than gearbox side)
Easiest thing is to drill out threads on the engine side of bell housing.

May also find a difference in gearbox profile at starter motor, there may be a gap between starter nose and Gbox housing.
So far that's not caused any drama on my van and it gets put through some shity conditions.

It shouldn't be an issue to fit any age mk7 box, even modern ranger Gbox's fit with a bit of tinkering

Thank you for the gearbox insight. I have now ordered one and looking forward to some smooth shifting again.

On a second note, is there anyone who you know of that would want/buy second hand gearboxes for refurbishment? Seems a shame for it to just go to the scrap yard.
To my knowledge the synchromesh of my first and second gear are worn and would need replacement but otherwise the gearbox runs well.

I'd guess that there are a plethora of mk7 boxes in the breakers these days so probably unlikely unless you have ordered a refurbed unit and they would take yours in return.
But have a goggle or weigh it in for beer tokens.
