Earth the lights straight to the fixing bolts holding them in. The reds need that feed from the relay you are putting in.

i agree with the relay approach even tho im rinning 8x extra orange side markers,5x extra rear markers & 4x extra front markers without a relay  with no problems for last year or so :D only things ive put relays on are air horn and 1 to the 4 roof spots & 1 to the pair of bottom spots & 1 to the spots on front a bar :D but then again im not a qualifeid auto electrician

I was wondering, would it be possible to fit side marker lights so that they operate as running lights, then when turning on the indicators, get them to dim between the indicators flashing?

i.e. when you activate the indicators, they will dim to say 50% during the time the indicator bulbs are off, so in effect flash in time. When the indicator bulbs are on, the side markers would return to 100%, then 50%, 100% and so on.

Must be possible, but how much of a faff would it be?

It's a touch small. Kinda looks like it though.

Its easy, a resistor is need to dim your side lights by what ever percentage you require but a diode is also required to prevent feed going to your tail lights, front park/side lights and top markers if fitted.

Feed from indicator is then attached to your side markers direct but a diode is inline to prevent return power when your side lights are on.

If using LED marker lights a relay is not that important as draw is minimal, per side you might be pulling an extra 500 milli amps to 1 amp, if fuse doesnt blow then you can rest assured the wiring is more than capable of suppling good power to your LEDs, if lighting is marginally dimmed when connected it would be an ideal time to upgrade the earth on back lights as connector that is used is pathtic, done mine today as lights were pulsating indicating poor earth
