Ford Transit 2011 T350 2.4 RWD Engine oil leak

Postby beweek » Mon Apr 14, 2025 12:42 pm

I am the second owner of this van and have had it 9 years and it has been regularly serviced. There is now an oil leak from the front of the engine which I originally thought was coming from the sump gasket by the crankshaft pulley but the gasket has been changed twice and has not cured the problem. I have cleaned off the sump and can confirm the oil is coming from the area around the sump to block joint but cannot see where. Any help would be much appreciated

Above the sump sandwiched between the sump and the block is another section of the engine called a stiffener or ladder frame, this is another source of leaks but cant be readily unbolted like the sump as bolts holding the gearbox on pass into it.

Another place to look is the crankshaft oil seal

sometimes leaks are caused by excess pressure from ..a worn engine or Failed injector washers ,
or blocked breather.

Thanks Mark I think your advice has cracked it.

I started with simple checks by pulling off the breather pipe when it goes into the air intake and there was blue smoke emerging from the pipe, so it was not blocked and when I put my thumb avross the end of the pipe You can hear it hiss as my thumb was removed. I then replaced the pipe and removed the oil filler cap and there were clouds of blue smoke coming out from the oil filler tube, considering the pressure involved my next check will be on the injector seals and washers with a view to replacing them. I hopeful this is the cause of the oil leak.

Thank you

Yep, leaking injector copper washers are very common...as our metalworker0 mentioned, this can cause excessive internal pressures and force oil leaks from all sorts of areas...

If she's chuffing like a steam train from the oil filler cap at idle...just do the copper washers anyway....then you can get on to sorting the oil leak.
