Done that exact thing a few months ago. Take your time with it, easy to cut the metal away, not so easy to put back!
Is this a maxxair fan?
Do you have a flat surface or does it have ridges? Mine being a Mk7 hight top meant there are no flat spots on top so I used an adapter on the roof first.

I ordered the blank version and cut out the v shape groves myself so it matched the raised parts of my roof. I fitted it slightly different from their instructions as I made a wooden frame to fit to the underside of my roof first then screwed the adapter to it.

Nice one, yh I will be doing a 2 inch by 2 inch frame too, then drill up from inside in corners and jig out square.

The adapter plate looks useful, terribly expensive for what it is however.

Appreciate the help.

I agree, very pricey for what it is, however made the install a lot easier I thought.
