Rust spots above windscreen

Postby DanMK7uk » Sun May 04, 2025 7:27 pm

On my high top, camper. Its got that slope above windshield

Few rust spots

Obviously paint would cover it, but does it need ground back or is it very unlikely it would eat away to cause holes ?

Hammerite do a direct to rust paint, so was thinking of a rough up and few coats.

Cheers

Well, Dan, I have the same problem. Last year when I got my van, I climbed up on ladders and sanded back the rust, before treating with krust. Then primed, painted and lacquered. Looked great for several months. Starting to re-appear again now

Guess I'll have to do it again, but be more aggressive this time.

The kurust will only keep the problem away for so long ...you have to get down to bare metal ..although i think kurust has phosphoric acid in it ..it's weak and just penetrates less then 1/2 mm of the surface of the rust and then seals with what i can only describe as copydex carpet adhesive ..smells, looks and feels the same. they call it latex.

Now then.

Stronger pure phosphoric acid would do better ..applied several times, wire brush until you see no black spots.

Or abrade down to bare metal... do not wire brush, as wire brush can give you false impression that you've removed the rust, as everything turns silver ....when in fact you've just polished the rust. depositing a sheen of new metal to it from the strands of the brush.

Now then ....primer ..if you want it to never rust again ..use Zinc Chromate primer (hard to get hold of now)

wrapping .

Proof of how effective that is will be the people here, who have had stickers transfers on that part of the van ...and had rust problems later and perhaps found that the stickers have have saved it from rusting in the areas they covered .

see if anyone answers

That would be interesting to learn. In theory, separating the metal (rust) from any oxygen supply should prevent further oxidization. However some parts seem to find a way around this conundrum, for example rust bubbles under the plastic-coated trims around side windows etc
