Started….. now no started

Postby Mattastrophy » Mon May 05, 2025 8:56 pm

Hi,
Hope I’m posting this in right place as first time on.

I’ve got a 2009 T350 2.4 115.
It was my workhorse at one point, daily work van and hardly ever let me down.
After dying on me one day my boss decided to buy me a ‘more reliable’ mode of transport by way of an ex bt vivaro……. The less I talk about this bag of w**k the better.
When plugged in it flagged up several EGR related issues. However due to several things it’s been sat on my yard for the last 2 years.
So a couple of weeks ago I decided enough is enough and to at least attempt to get it going again.
Stuck a new EGR valve on her and 2 new batteries and this morning thought bollocks to it I’ll give her a crank.
Surprised me massively as prob not even 2 turns in and she fired up and ran pretty smooth considering.
This joy was somewhat short lived when suddenly cutting out.
Now when attempting to start I get a click and nowt else.
It does feel like starter is trying to do something… I may be wrong.
I’ve popped aux belt off incase anything seized dragging on engine but this not the case.

Just after any ideas as to what it could be.
Think my next avenue will be taking starter off and checking not stuck in and fowling flywheel.
Did Also wonder if the new EGR valve isn’t causing it somehow.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Cheers in advance

Poorly starter or starter solenoid is a good call. Also the ignition switch is a common fail.

EGR valve won't stop the engine from starting. They're usually open during starting and at idle anyway.

Thanks for the reply Knobby.
Got a fair bit to do on this van to get it back to how I want it.
Injector seals have either gone, or the clamp isn’t holding them where they need to be as the top of the rocker is dripping with the black stuff.
Noticed also that the overflowing oil then runs down and ‘lubricates’ the starter in the process, so probably doing it no favours at all.
Not sure if to try and clean it up or just cut my losses and replace it.
Engine will be coming out eventually to address oil leaks and some clean up jobs but needed to know it was a runner before starting down that route!

Don’t suppose there are any threads on here going through an engine extraction? Never done one before so any help will be much appreciated. I’m sure I’ll be harassing people here for help sooner than later too!

Thanks again

There's several youtube videos of people removing engines etc... RWD is actually easier to remove than the FWD... and is easier to pull the engine and gearbox together.....the front of the van needs to come off though....and you'll need an engine crane to do it safely.

This is a Mk6 but the idea is the same.

Spot on thanks.
Luckily my boss sells engine cranes, so getting my hands on one shouldn’t be too difficult.
I was hoping the whole lot would slide out in one lump.
Judging in the amount of oily crud that seems to be covering…. Well… everything I think I’m going to need a serious amount of degreaser to get everything clean.
It seems currently my engine is 3/4 caked in a self generating waxoil!
