Dirty Diesel

Postby mr_miyagi » Fri Apr 25, 2025 12:04 pm

Hi guys.

I have a 2012 140 sport that has very dirty fuel in the filter. I've attached a photo of what's come drained out of the filter. I suspect it's bad fuel in the tank. Is there a way to drain the fuel tank without taking it off. It's half full.

I used a small 12v electric pump and some lengths of plastic tubing, and drew the tank fuel out through the filter into a container.
In my case, that was when my son added petrol to the tank!

I'm not sure that this method will completely drain the tank, but the only way to do this is to remove it.

Good point, well spotted :P

Will the pump run for long enough to drain the tank without the engine running :?: If so, easy job :D

Thanks for the replies. If there's a pump in the tank, do they ever start to fail? Also if there's a pump is there also a pressure regulator, can that fail? It runs really bad. If I try to hold a constant speed like in a 30 limit it judders and misfires. Then if I put the throttle down a bit it wants to go but is very noisy, really bad diesel knock. I put a new filter in as I needed to use the van.

The injectors are new, just been fitted. I've got it booked in for next week to have the it set to "Learn" the injectors. I'm being told it's a problem called "Diesel Bug". Never heard of that.

Diesel bug is common....it usually lives in the layer between the fuel and water....mainly caused by condensation inside the fuel tank if the tank is not kept full and/or the vehicle is kept sitting for extended periods.

This is my only vehicle so I use it every day. Typically put around £60 of diesel in a week. It ran perfectly fine until shortly after filling up at a rather grim services on the A5. I'm wondering if that's where it's come from. I have to get back to work and home again after, about a 5 minute journey. Will I be doing any harm driving it whilst it's like this. I've put some Biocide in the tank to see if that helps. I'm guessing now I'm going to have to take the tank off and clean it all out. Great, more work.

Quite possible you got it from your last fill-up....
