They don't tend to playup when not under load, when under load the balls inside the inner CV joint cups get caught in the wear grooves inside the joint cup and the whole joint tends to stick in the one place and cause the whole van to bounce or wobble a bit....when the load is removed, the joint frees up and all is good with the world. Do you remember hearing the old Mini's clicking and clunking their way around a tight corner or while doing a U turn..?? Same thing applies here but it's the inner joints causing the issue....the old mini's didn't have an inner CV joint just a rubber covered steel uni joint...the 1275 Cooper S with the disc brake front end had a proper steel inner uni joint.

New shafts are arelatively cheap and easy to replace.....if she's done quite a few miles, I'd replaced them anyway. They don't last forever.

YES IT will pour out .but slowly ..you can use 2 litre plastic milk bottle tops/lids as temporary plug on each side . ..ive not personally tried that, only seen it mentioned on a forum, don't stuff it with blue tissue, it will only act as a wick.

if its done over 40,000 since last gear oil change ..drop the oil and put in new stuff , when done

all the best.mark

I hope they aren’t J&R driveshafts. They aren’t the best and their customer service is appalling.

Oil in the gearbox, not engine....engine oil won't be affected....although new engine oil and filter is always a good thing.

Just drop the old gearbox oil and refill with new oil when the new shafts are in...job done. If the gear oil hasn't been changed relatively recently....it will probably smell horrid.

I assume you mean the drive shaft support bearing..?? Wouldn't hurt if it has done a few miles.

As mentioned above, engine oil and gearbox oil are very separate. I remember the old original Mini's and Morris 1100's/1500's had engine/gearbox oil all in one, they were definitely fun to work on.

Just change the gearbox oil, I suspect you don't know how long it's been in there.

Shaft bearing will be ok,
Driveshaft vibrations is hard to diagnose without swapping with new or known good ones,
I take it you got all the wheels balanced and not just the front ones, wheelbearings starting to go you'd hear a noise as well as a vibration and can be heard more on long bends, but don't be fooled if you hear the wheelbearings when driving and think you know what side......can almost guarantee you its the opposite side from what you think......its a mk7 thing

I've recently got this on my Mk 7 FWD MWB Low roof 2.2 litre 110 PS which I bought new in March 2008, and is now on 96,000 miles.

It had new tyres at 58,000, and new front wheel bearings, discs, pads at 73,316 miles.

Just had front wheels rebalanced as first step in this investigation. No significant change.

The vibration comes in at 65 mph (5th gear) and by 70 mph it is getting intolerable. There is no steering wheel shake. There are no clunks at full left or right lock.

I will be looking at driveshaft bearings. But welcome any comment/suggestions.

Thanks
