Remote locking and spare key coding problems

Postby sf4673 » Fri Jun 27, 2025 1:37 pm

First post on the forum.

I have a 2008 ford transit for which I have one remote key that starts the van but the remote locking wont work. Central locking when using the key in door works as expected. Over the years I have tried to work out why my remote locking is not working by:
- Getting the remote key repaired (spare battery, new micro switches, functionality tested and confirmed working).
- Verifying that the remote receiver in the headliner lights up when the key buttons are pressed.
- Checking all relevant fuses are not blown.
- Checking both batteries under the drivers seat are healthy and holding charge.

Having somewhat given up on this, separately I wanted to get a spare key cut as I don't currently have one. I also thought that by doing this I might be able to recode my existing key which might solve the remote locking problem. So I got a spare non-remove key cut with the 4D63 80bit chip, which has been tested and registers correctly, and borrowed a fobfix to do the coding.

When using the fobfix it returns 3 beeps indicating there are three keys currently coded, out of a maximum of 4 if I understand correctly. So I tried to add the new non-remote key and the fob fix hangs in add key mode (for at least 2 mins) and does not complete the process. I then tried to delete all keys and start afresh and the same thing happens - fobfix hangs with a flashing green light without completing the process (no close-down descending beeps). So I then borrowed one of the older type fobfix coders (one single button on the end as oppose to the never 4 dip switch type) and I am getting the same result.

Overall, what I want is a newly coded spare key and for the remote locking on my existing key to work. So far I think I have verified that the remote key works and that the van receives the signal. I have also tried to add a new key and delete the existing keys using a fobfix and have been unsuccessful in both attempts with two different fobfix devices.

Any thoughts on other things to try would be most welcome. Thanks

Try forscan under PATS iv never had a problem coding keys on that.

Have you got the adapter?

30 quid off amazon

V linker forscan.

Just need a windows laptop

Also very useful for fault diagnosis!

Ok that sounds worth a go. Not familiar with forscan - is the software free? I don't have an adaptor and it looks like there are a few options. Is this the right kind please?

Hope this helps, if there is anything else you need once set up, give us a shout.

Welcome to the forums

You will find forscan really useful for other stuff too.

Someone might input later on the issue your having but i cant think of anything much else !

Cheers Dan I have made some progress, but not total success yet. I have downloaded forscan, extended license and connected to the van no problem. I was able to code my new key, the key count went up in forscan (now 4) and I was able to start the engine once.

Unfortunately, the key no longer works and I get the rapid pats light - quite confusing.

I had a poke around in the DTCs in forscan and have the following in the BCM module:

Code: B10AB - Remote Keyless Entry Synchronization

Status (-48):
- Previously Set DTC - Not Present at Time of Request
- Malfunction Indicator Lamp is Off for this DTC
- Test not complete

Module: Body Control Module

-----

Code: B10D7 - PATS Key

Additional Fault Symptom (:94):
- Unexpected Operation

Status (-08):
- Previously Set DTC - Not Present at Time of Request
- Malfunction Indicator Lamp is Off for this DTC

Module: Body Control Module

-----

Code: B10D7 - PATS Key

Additional Fault Symptom (:51):
- Not Programmed

Status (-08):
- Previously Set DTC - Not Present at Time of Request
- Malfunction Indicator Lamp is Off for this DTC

Module: Body Control Module

So overall I am where I started, in that I have a remote key that is not unlocking the van but starts the ignition and a non remote key that doesn't start the ignition. Any suggestions of what to try next?

Cheers
Sam

Another update. Thanks to Dan for the forscan suggestion, a few days later I have just gone out to the van and am able to start it with both keys. I've no idea what happened when I did the coding as I am sure the newly coded key was not consistently working then, but it seems fine now. Is it possible the computer needed to do some sort of reset and that leaving it lie a few days allowed this to happen? Or was I supposed to code the key and then disconnect forscan before starting the engine?

So my next question is that as I have been able to code a new key successfully, logically it should be possible to do this again. If were to erase all keys and recode x2, it is possible this would fix my Code: B10AB - Remote Keyless Entry Synchronization code and revive my remote locking?

Has anyone has the key synchronisation problem before and managed to fix it by erasing keys and recoding?

Cheers

Could try… beyond that maybe mobile autolocksmith. Beyond coding a new key in on forscan most of us aint got the know how beyond that… myself included

If they van starts with the key in question it must be coded. As i understand, the remote part of the locking is paired / coded at the same time..

To bring this to a close, I can report back that I summoned to courage to erase all currently programmed keys and reprogram my two. This has also solved my remote key synchronisation problem, happy days! Thanks for the guidance Dan.

From my experience it seems forscan is more reliable and effective than a fobfix, which seemed unable to complete commands with my van - 2008 mk7.

Hope this can be of use to someone in the future.
