Mk6 2.4tdi not charging?

Postby JRHartley » Mon Jul 07, 2025 8:56 pm

Ive put a early one wire fuel pump on this 2.4tdi, I purchased this van with a pump fault & Im not sure if the charging system was working before I changed the pump.
I know of some one doing the same pump swop & found the charge light now stays on, but he's getting a charge from the alt'.

Is there some thing Ive disturbed on the right side of the engine bay, solenoid? wiring socket etc? or is the alternator done. Is there a more basic alternator that will bolt straight on? any one have a schematics of the charging system? Thanks for any help!

12.4v at all rpm, I read its a smart alt? I wonder if I could strip it down & use regular diode pack & regulator?

Mk6 doesn't have a "smart alternator"...if engine is running, you should have ~14.4v across the battery. Is the battery itself ok..?? Have you had it properly load tested..?? Not just a voltage check.

If memories serve me correctly, on a smart charge alternator the voltage goes down under load .. i think.. perhaps opposite. Silly idea!
Dk if yours has that or not.. how many connections on the multi plug on the alternator?

Either way, if voltage aint changing atall. It dont sound happy.

On smart alternators pulling the multi plug off effectively makes them a normal type.

Check directly at alternator end on the big red cable and to ground on alternator casing.

It has one socket with two thin wires & one thick feed wire. I think Knobby is correct on this being Non smart?

No...the battery has to be "loaded" using a proper battery tester.....sometimes they can show good voltage but fail miserably when loaded.

Sounds like conventional then.

As knobby says, its the amps that count which a load test checks, however it wouldn’t stop the alternator putting out what it should..

Check with a multimeter, across b+ thats the fat red cable on the alternator and ground alternator casing, on a clean metal scratch probe on casing. That will tell you what its putting out with no doubt about anything between battery and it.

Its not working, removed it and checked its really in a sorry state.
I have a Denso new Alt', it has the main out put post, and a four pin socket marked L, IG, FR, S. Ive run the part numbers but nothing comes up.

B is clear, charges the battery, goes to battery

L, lamp, exciter wire, connected to a bulb

IG, connected to Ignition switched +12V

S, sense, connected to battery to provide the actual charge voltage.

Is the above correct? thank you

IDK on that one

If your old one has 2 cables … maybe it aint right

Pop the number over part on the alternator
