Steering Wheel Spacer For Lap/ Leg Clearance & MOT?

Postby JRHartley » Sun Jul 06, 2025 2:10 pm

Whats the score with MOT time I would like to fit a spacer to get more leg room, the swivel seat unit has raised the seat height & its really tight, very difficult to lower the seat mount, Would the MOT be happy having the indicator stalks etc 3" further away from the wheel?

Good chance the seat swivel will fail, best to move your batter/batteries , cut and shut the seat box by a few inches... problem solved, nae faffing about moving steering wheel, column , switches, or whatever your thinking of doing...... dont over think it

You could have problems with the insurance as well as the mot it depends on how the tester interpretation of the regs and if he can fail it or put an advisory on it .
It may be worth looking at what disability aids can be fitted to vehicles if they do column extensions you would expect them to be type approved.
My hobby is marshalling on car rallies and M sport who run the FORD WORKS rally team do fiesta rally cars for all the different classes in uk motorsport from starter to the top national championship cars and none of them have a air bag and the top spec car has a extended steering column and the foot pedals are mounting on the floor and the seats are moved back to give extra side impact protection for the crew from the B pillar and roll cage so when they are 3 years old they need a mot to be used on the road and will be done at garages anywhere in the uk so I think they’re must be some flexibility in the test unless they are classified as a kit car .
On the seat swivel and mot never heard of anyone having a problem if it’s securely locked in place when I first fitted mine they had slight movement I didn’t like so I removed the locking catch and drilled a hole in both plates welded a nut underneath at the front and back of the swivel and use two locking bolts so they have no movement at all when in driving position

Yeah it was the excess movement i was talking about may fail if any ...seen a few that would make you sea sick with the rocking movement

For anyone who are thinking of doing what I’ve done for the two locking bolts I used the locking knobs off a Preston seat box they are 8 mil bolts with a plastic hand wheel there are loads of different attachments that have this bolt.
