Mk6 radio replacement

Postby zipppy » Thu Sep 05, 2024 12:06 am

I want to replace the standard https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/Ai8AAOSwkl5Xd9RL/s-l1600.webp radio with something a bit more modern. Ideally Android Auto capable etc. Can anyone suggest a good one?

Just use any double din radio, it'll take 5 mins with a dremel to make the hole a bit bigger. Here's my 35 euro one with a reverse camera off amazon

Sorry all to bump an old thread, but it seemed better than just making a new one.

In regards to fitting a double DIN head unit into a mk6 Dash, how is it mounted? Is there a fitting kit that is used?

Currently my head unit is just jammed in place with cardboard and sometimes falls into the dash, I'd like to fix this.
Any advice would be very helpful.,

thanks

If you adjust the gap at the top a little with a dremel tool it is possible to fit a common double DIN frame into it. I fitted a Kenwood/JVC DMX7722DABS with a short frame length of 7,5 cm. It takes more space at the top than the gap of SCAS radio. Now driving with wireless Apple Car play in Europe!

nice install.

what does the double DIN frame attach to though?

I have the plastic facsia with a hole big enough for the headunit, but behind that fascia there is nothing to attach to? no structure. just the plastic frame of the dash.
Thats where I have the cardboard jammed in to hold the headunit in place.

Just bend the lips of the frame behind the plastic dasboard gap. I remember the frame was so tight already without bending. Good luck.

Yea, that's what I was concerned about.

Doing that hangs the cradle and weight of the headunit right on the edge of the plastic facsia. Give it some hot aussie UV sun damage and vibrations and it'll crack the whole fascia over time, they are already pretty hard to find uncracked.
It's not the first car I've seen this happen on

Guess I'll just have to make something from scratch...

Cheers anyways.
