Mk7 rear brake discs and pads - replacement?

Hi,

Question re my ford transit (2.2 fwd H2L2 Mk7).

The brake pad indicator is illuminated on the dash. A recent service highlighted the rear pads and discs need changing.

A quote I've had includes changing the bearings at the same time as they're often seized and is just shy of £600. This seems quite a bit - given the rear brakes get less use how can I be sure the discs need replacing and is changing the bearings also a good idea?

first way - You are look at the edge of the disk for a ridge where the pads dont wear it out .. if that ridge is more than about 3mm (taking into account that rusts grows ) then its getting close to replacement

other ways .... some diacs have scallop cut out of them where the absolute wear limit is .. when it reaches that, defo time to replace

3 years ago the guy across the road had two discs and pads all round on his transit ... this didnt include wheel bearings .. he paid something like £400, that was not a ford dealer .some ford dealers now charge £100 plus vat an hour.

i say £600 is about what most are paying for what you listed

also surface finish .. if it has deep ridges on in the discs, time to replace, even if only one, both are replaced.. as they are replaced in pairs to ensure evenness of braking

Thanks both. Shall crawl under the van and check the state of the discs when I get a moment.

In terms of cost it was £90 for the discs, £40 for the pads and £236 for the bearings and then labour which to be fair wasn't that high.

It's the bearings I'm questioning. The garage say these are normally seized as well but is this right as it doubles the cost. I've seen no evidence of it and had experience of the front bearings going.

perhaps they are doing them because of the high mileage, in other words saving a near future tear down, so saving you money

Thats silly cheap, with a good trade rate the cheapest I could get a single hub for mine was £92.xx So - are they actually worth having?

Its also worth noting there are 2 different size wheel bearings - mine has 45mm, my other has 35mm. I assume its because mine is a 330 (330 and 350 have 45mm, smaller have 35mm).

Separating the discs from the hubs can be a mission - thats probably the real reason why new hubs (bearings) are being suggested. 14 Tonnes in the press on the one I did at the weekend.

All on ebay - I got a pair of Bosch discs for about £27, then found they didn't have the ABS rings - that was another £15, Pads were about £25.

Including changing the handbrake cables, freeing off the caliper slider, taking the hub and stub axle off my other van - it took me about 5 hours to do rear discs and pads. It took about an hour just to get the disc off the hub I kept!

Yes you can get them cheap .. but the poster was talking about taking it to a garage and if the prices were good or bad . he probably knows that he can get them cheap and do it himself .. but that wasn't the question.

Considering he's asking about £600 being good or bad i doubt he knew parts prices and an hour a side labour should be adequate
