Need help with a MK6 Twin wheel LWB

Postby MtechnicUK » Mon Sep 22, 2025 6:41 pm

Hello, I bought this mk6 transit recovery truck about a year ago it has been running well, but it's MOT is up and I need to do the rear brakes as the handbrake is terrible and front ball joints, looking for advice on the rear brakes and what I need.

There isn't much info on these I'm assuming I pull the axle then the 65m nut and then the drum. On mine the hub sticks our further than ones I've seen.

Also on the front, the lower end of the ball joint is stuck in the arm, I've had the map gas on it and a sledge but no luck, I was going to replace the arms but Im not sure I can get the subframe bolt out :D

Any advice with these twin wheel mk6s would be appreciated. Thanks

The dual rear wheel Mk6's use a "Dana" full floating rear axle with 6 stud hub...the normal single wheel Mk6's just use a "non floating" rear axle with 5 studs.

You should be able to get the drum off without removing the hub....unless it is badly corroded...which is often the case. Just get new lower arms for the front....the arm will probably be munted by the time you get the ball joint out.

This is your rear end:

The "DRW" top one. The SRW is the single rear wheel setup.

With the lower arm ... you are in a hopeless situation

So you could not separate it ... so you undone the circlip .. bashed it out and hack-sawed it off the lower arm.

Too late now - so looks like you have no tools at all ... you needed a ball joint separator.

or this
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/276635068889?

its on a taper on the lower arm and would have to be bashed upwards .......you've got no chance! unless you take the lower arm off and put it in a vice.

Then you may as well replace the whole of the lower arm ... as you'll probably damage that beyond saving getting that off .

Getting the lower arm off can be more painful than what you have just done, if you have rust plus I believe when its bad with rust, the captive nuts turn inside the chassis legs... then you are royally stuffed!

So new lower arm needed .
You'll need this tool to get the new ball joint back into the knuckle . difficult and very hard.

.. or RECOMMENDED -do it the proper way and and take the hub off and use a press - easy if you have all the adaptors with the press.

sorry cant help with brakes - others will.

all the best..mark
