weird starting problem

Postby ogri » Tue Sep 23, 2025 5:09 pm

Hello All.
been a long time since i posted...which is mostly all youse fault because you put me onto such a good van
tennish years ago i asked for advice on a decent transit, having suffered two merc sprinters. following your advice i bought a 09 mk7, FWD, with 88k up. Again following your advice, i had a feller on here from london remap it and remove the egr for £300, making for the best van ive ever owned. Today, its still going strong with 234k up. still economical, still dont burn oil. I do drive like an old man(actually at 66 i am one), and over the years its had clutch, injectors, drive shafts, clutch slave etc as would be expected. but it has always, always been a good starter.
About four months ago it developed this weird thing where if i turned the ignition on and immediately tried to start it it would just spin forever without firing at all. if i turned it on and waited a few seconds it would fire on the button.this happens regardless of whether its hot or cold. the problem has suddenly got worse, so much so that sometimes even if i wait, it wont fire 5 times out of six. give it a sniff of brake cleaner in the intake and it fires straight away, every time.
so, i changed the crankshaft sensor (jesus thats a pig of a job to get to tho isnt it  ) no good. so i got a kit of the three sensors/valves for the fuel pump and rail. The big one on the pump went ok, the left hand manifold one wouldnt screw all the way in so kept the old one and the right hand manifold one had a banjo fitting different to mine so i left that too. so much for the £90 ebay kit that 440 people were apparently satisfied with :?:
anyhoo, problem still there. got a gen ford fuel filter coming tommorrow, so will fit that but im not optimistic sadly.
Ive had a decent reader (snap on) connected up a couple of times but it throws up no codes or the odd one, ranging from key not communicating to low fuel pressure. The low pressure one has actually thrown up every time in the last six years which i put down to an ageing pump but its never stopped it running or anything. Im genuinly at a loss. ive never changed the battery in the key because i was told its not doable as its a rechargable jobbie when its in the ignition. And it still locks/unlocks the van no problemo even from twenty yards away. its a twin battery van, and i had both replaced as a pair 9 months ago so i dont think theres a probem there either.Alternator two months ago, starter motor about the same time. i do look after the old girl. and shes always looked after me up until now. Any ideas/shared fault experience very much appreciated :? :?

When were the learns last done..?? When was the fuel filter last replaced..??

The 90 quid eBay SCV/PRV and fuel pressure sensor kit you bought are not genuine Denso items...which is why they don't fit or work properly. You cannot buy a genuine Ford rail pressure sensor without the complete rail as they are calibrated as one piece. The real/genuine items are much more expensive. The pressure sensors never fail so we don't recommend replacing them. If the engine runs, the PRV is probably ok too...it's the SCV causing your grief.

The SCV especially needs to be a genuine Denso item or you be in a world of grief. They are expensive.

After fitting, the learns need to be completed successfully...or you're wasting your time.

If you have to ask, I'm assuming they've never been done. They don't have an "ECU" as such...they have a PCM, (Powertrain Control Module). Any time a fuel component is repaired or replaced...the learns should be done. No two SCV's, PRV's, pumps or injectors are exactly the same...even if they share the same part numbers. The learns will calibrate each item to work properly with the others. So many people just plonk new, pumps, injectors or valves on their engine and never do the learns....then complain about them when they don't work properly.

It's essentially a fine tuning of the fuel system and is a "service function" but very few people ever do it as part of a service...even more people don't even know about it. It's in Forscan in the sevice functions tab.
