Timing top dead center

Postby Funkycarldog » Tue Dec 02, 2025 4:32 pm

Hi all,

2.2 Euro 5, 62 plate. Fwd

I'm replacing the timing chain. I have locked the flywheel and lined up all the markings, but the piston is not right at the top; it's about an inch down. Would this be correct? Because i thought it had to be at top

yeah think its done at 50 degrees BTDC... this would be so you could move the sprockets a bit .. as these engines have flat combustion chamber with valves almost touching the pistons at TDC

so they arrange for you to do it at 50 degrees

cant think of another way to explain it .. engine in safe position

so as long as the marks line up and the crankshaft is locked, 50 degrees is the position its locked at to do the timing .. yes piston would not be at the top

Thank you for your reply, and I understand about the piston now. It's all lined up where it should be, hopefully correctly.

Well after pulling out the grenade release clip on the tensioner, you always turn it through two revolutions by hand as a check that nothings touching before slapping on the cover .. note the timing marks will not line up until many revolutions. so its a bit daunting when you see that.
