Rear axle ratio

Hi all, I think my rear diff is shot there is about 2 inches of rotation on the prop before you get drive and if you let the clutch out sharply it makes a loud clunk so iv’e been nursing it along for now, iv’e found another one with a 5.? ratio forgot what he said actual ratio was and it’s off a 6 speed minibus with same 2.4 engine, my question is do you think it would be ok for me to use it? considering my diff has a ratio of 4.63

Mine has a 5. something diff and the gearing is quite low (not silly, but I'd rather it was a bit taller). 6th gear will pull from 35mph. It depends on the speed you tend to travel at. I mainly cruise along at 55-60 (not in a hurry in a camper) but if you want to do 70, it might be a bit tiresome after a while.

Mk6 TDDi's only come in 3 ratios, 4.63, 5.13 & 5.14....the 5.xx ratios were maily for the tippers, campers, recovery and Luton type vehicles.....the 6 speed minibus would have been a 2.4 TDCi and had a Dana axle which had more ratios available. But the prop shaft will be different and slightly shorter as the 6 speed box is slightly longer than the 5 speed. Some people have gone for a Mk7 Dana rear axle but they have disc brakes....if you have ABS it can cause issues.

Ah right so the 5.11 and 5.13 would be shorter gearing which is not something i’d want i’ll see if i can find a 4.63 like mine, i’ll put a post up in the wanted section cheers for the replies chaps

The 5.11 was never an option for the TDDi engined 2.4's, only 4.63, 5.13 & 5.14....but yeah, it'll be "revving it's tits off" @70mph with a 5.xx ratio diff.

It would be worth checking the price with a local to your axle specialist who can rebuild your axle

I agree with dumper. There are gearbox/axle specialists that can rebuild these things to a very high standard...and then you know it's the right one.

There’s a couple of places oop north who do the rebuild but it’s £800 ish plus i’d have to drive it there although there is the option where they come to you and do it in a couple of hours but i expect there would be travelling costs on top, kits have one for £350 and they’re on this forum so they must be kosher

When you say up north if it’s Henderson Transmissions i have had work done by them and know of local garages that also use them and not heard of any problems.
