Crankshaft pulley removal

Hi
While stripping my engine to do cylinder head gasket etc, I'm down to remove timing chain cover, but I can't get the crankshaft pulley off, is there a specific tool to hold the crankshaft while trying to undo the securing bolts?
I have the vehicle in gear, but engine moves about, as the mounting bracket is removed!!

The mechs remove it with an impact gun,

but you can lock it by removing the starter motor and improvising something to go in the teeth of the ring gear.

Mk6 or Mk7..?? FWD or RWD..?? Just use a good quality knuckle bar with 15mm single hex socket....sit the knuckle bar on a jack stand and hit the starter....Pull the ignition relay if Mk6 or disconnect the injector connectors if Mk7, you don't want it starting on you.

Why are you doing the head gasket..?? Very rare for them to fail.

Just use a good quality knuckle bar with 15mm single hex socket....sit the knuckle bar on a jack stand and hit the starter....

I was going to suggest this earlier, but thought that some doom and gloom merchant would say how dangerous it was I've also done it by fixing the knuckle bar firmly to the chassis, and towing the van backwards (in gear)

Can be done dangerously...Have seen people put the knuckle bar on the wrong side and torn pipes and hoses to pieces etc when hitting the starter.

Common sense should prevail one would hope.

Ideally exert too much force a shear it off OR bash it into submission with a big hammer.
