Mk 7 Air Cond Not Working

Postby in_transit_vanlife » Thu Sep 19, 2024 7:26 am

Hi All
My 2008 VM 2.4TD Transit air con stopped working on a really hot day at the end of last summer. A few days later started working again and ok until we got a hotter day months later. A few days later started working again and then it stopped working and hasn't come back.
Assumptions are: air con gas is ok otherwise it wouldn't work again, presuming electrical intermittent fault. Air con light on the switch comes on and off with pushing switch and upon turning to windscreen vents. Interior fan and vents working ok. Heater valve working as it should. Checked compressor and its not cutting in when air con switch is pushed. Read that the condenser fan needs to be working before compressor will switch on. Mine has the single electric condenser fan behind the radiator with the larger belt driven fan. Condenser fan not working, so pull it out and connect direct to 12V. Fan is dead so get a new fan. Bench tested new fan and working fine. Install fan and still nothing. Fan not working, compressor clutch not working. Checked and tested all fuses, they are OK. Swapped relays and no difference. I have 12v power to the fan control module but nothing on the outlet plug which the fan is connected to. I presume a signal gets sent to the module to turn the fan on & off.
How can I test the fan control module?
Anything else I should look at or test?

Couldn't find a genuine replacement control module, most aftermarket are for the twin electric fans. Found a single fan control module that are for Transit 2006-2013 but 2.2tdci. The plugs look the same so I'm assuming these will work in mine?

Many thanks

Start with the basics.
Check gas is at sufficient pressure, get it charged as the systems do lose pressure and are allowed a specific amount of loss over a year.
Check your pressure switch, pull plug and bridge contacts to test if system functions, do not leave switch bypassed after test.

Where are the pressure switches located? Is it the low pressure or high pressure switch?

Low pressure switch is below fusebox behind right hand headlight.
Take headlight out for easier access

Pulled wires from low pressure switch and bridged them and compressor works as it should but the condensor fan still doesn't come on - can I assume that the control module for the condensor fan is probably dead? and looks like I need a regas unless the low pressure switch is also no good.

First job, get it's gas topped up.
Usually not expensive and removes any questions on that front.
Then start looking at other faults if it still has any....

Turned out to be a few issues. Small hole in A/C pipe to condenser. Fixed that and regas but was intermittent. Pulled fuses and relays and cleaned all contacts ( they looked crap) and all working again as it should.
