Turbo gone?

I have a 2002 Mk6 2.4 TDI converted ambulance which is now a campervan. I had an issue the other day and I think my turbo has gone.

I was on the A34 doing about 65 when the glow plug light flashed briefly there was a puff of black smoke from the exhaust and I lost all power, the van starts and runs but won't rev just stutters a bit and puts out a lot of whiteish smoke.

Does anybody know if there is anything else that might cause these symptoms that I should be checking before I take the turbo off? Also am I right in thinking that the turbo is part of the exhaust manifold and can't be taken off separately?

I don't have very much experience with diesel engines as I've only really worked on motorbikes in the past.

I've tried to see if there are any codes but my OBD reader my won't connect, it powers up but that's as far as it gets. It works on my 2.2 X type without any problems so I'm not sure if it's reader or if there is a problem with the port on the van.

Any ideas or help much appreciated.

You need to get the codes read...Mk6 Transits are "NOT" OBD-II compliant, so most of the newer OBD-II readers won't work...you need to get Forscan or Ford's IDS onto it.

Forscan is free to download onto a windows lappy and the cable is cheap enough.. https://forscan.org/download.html

The glow plug light also doubles as a DTC (Diagnostic Troouble Code) light, so it has probably logged a fault code.

Unfortunately guessing and loading up the parts cannon is pointless.

Knobby is definitely right. I took the advice from here and forscan works great on my Mk6. I used one of these to connect my laptop to the vanhttps://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/165918696853

May not be the turbo, but you need to scan it to know where to begin. Basics...is the fuel clean (no water or debris). Clean air filter (Mk6's like to allow rainwater into the airbox and dissolve the element). No splits on charge pipes. It should idle reasonably well without a functioning turbo but lack power. Oil leaking from a worn turbo normally gives you the opposite problem...it runs away!

Is it a TDI or TDCI?

Ok I bought vLinker module and that has connected ok.
The codes it is showing are;

P0235 MAP Sensor Circuit
Code: P0235 - MAP sensor circuit

Module: Powertrain Control Module

Diagnostic Trouble Code details

MAP sensor circuit

Open Circuit

This DTC may be caused by :

Manifold absolute pressure sensor

Sensor Previously disconnected.

Damaged or worn vacuum hose

Signal shorted to ground or signal return.

And this one;

B2550 Dome Lamp Output Circuit Short to Ground (Don't have any idea what this means or if it is related to the issue in anyway)

How do I tell the difference between a TDI and a TDCI? Forscan reports it as a DURATORQ_DI 2.4L Diesel

Looking at the pic I think it's a TDI engine but I'm sure someone on here will know for sure.

Yes that is TDI or also known as TDDI


TDCI is common rail, meaning injectors are supplied by one pipe from the pump ... and the injector firing is controlled by the PCM power train control module. the injectors are electronic . hence wires going to them

TDDI .. youl'l notice many steel pipes, looking like an octopus near the pump.

Map sensor should be an easy fix. Usually get clogged up with oily sooty crap and need either cleaning or replacing. On my Mk7 it gave erratic readings and similar symptoms to yours. Cutting/limiting power etc.
