Custom wheels on a Mk7?

Postby andrewh8877 » Fri Dec 19, 2025 1:30 am

Hello,
I bave a Mk7 2.2 LWB 350. It has 16" wheels, 5 bolt, single wheels at the rear.
I have broken a wheel and need to get a new one.
Just browsing ebay for second hand ones and there are load of 16" alloy wheels from Transit Customs. Does anyone know if these will fit straight on?
Thanks

Whatever you get make sure the load rating is enough for your rear axle plated weight.
Not all alloys are equal

Thanks. Are Custom ones likely to be lower rated than Mk7 ones?

Yes customs have a lower gross weight.

Apart from the weight problem they do fit but you would need to change your wheel nuts as the customs/mk8 have different style of wheel nut and different threads also so you cant just use custom nuts, when i change to custom steel wheels (4x steels for £80 like new) the nuts cost about £30,
ones for alloys will be more expensive

Thanks both.
I never get anywhere near the max payload (it's a camper and used for carrying mountain bikes, so bulky but light things) I've always used the correct, or higher, rated tyres. Is the load rating a legl requirement or just something to think about if you're carrying heavy things?

I'd fully load it with full tank of fuel etc and take it over a public weighbridge you might be surprised at the collective weight.

In a roadside stop it may never be spotted but in the unfortunate situation something happens your insurance will be void if they find out and you haven't declared it.

It is a legal requirement (construction and use regs, I doubt it be picked up at an MOT or if that's even a test category) that they are rated for what the axles are plated for regardless of the physical weight of the van.

Some good advice here. Don't be fooled in to thinking campers are light. You would be surprised how heavy they are (imagine if all the fixtures...fridge, oven etc, were in boxes to be delivered. The van would be fully loaded). Insurance is likely to be affected and if the overall tyre diameter is altered, your speedometer will be inaccurate.

Might be easier to invest in a really good quality set of hubcaps (if that's what they're called these days)
