axle nut coming loose.

Postby DanMK7uk » Wed Feb 18, 2026 7:07 pm

Hi guys, one of my vans, FWD n/s front axle nut keeps working loose, all torqued down with split pin and locking nut etc.

Any ideas what could cause it. Sounds and feels like a wheel bearing gone, but when you tighten it back down the play goes until it works loose again.

Cheers

all i can think of is the bearing is the type with a fixed space for clearance built into it (that why you can tighten it so tight- the clearance is set), once the balls and races start wearing--- its then an accelerated process .. as the ball and races will then be making swarf... so the clearance then enlarges as it weats more.. but you should not be able to take that back up by re-torquing.

mine does not have a split pin.. if its that type ... new nut required... and that is the fault

Cheers mark, this has the split pin and cover that goes on after the axle nut.

Im wondering if the hub may be the cause.. new hub bearing might be worth a go

Was the driveshaft, bearing and/or hub replaced or worked on recently..?? They're done up to a silly torque...500nm..!

This straight out of the manual:

try a new nut , but have used old nuts just rammed up with the Milwaukee or in olden days by master bar and jack handle, don't overly grease cv splines into hub as it can cause a false torque then leaks out and slight play starts, was it just the disc you changed ? how did you separate the bearing from knuckle when doing disc? are you not getting any bearing noise?

Not done a bearing as of yet andz, might be the next port of call and a hub..

Just a cv boot of late as split.

Bearing sounds smooth when wheel is spun by hand no play (if nuts tight).

The bugger keeps coming loose though.
