Engine, swaps, or replacements

Postby 4x4 tranny » Sat Feb 21, 2026 11:56 pm

Hi all.
just curious what's the most popular engine swaps or replacement , that's done over there? UK. mk 6/7 's
Here In Australia a lot of transits have had the v6 holden engine ( which are petrol) transplanted in them. It appears you can buy a kit, but there's a lot of work as trans, diff ratios and wiring need a lot of work it to happen. then they not thet economical
So was curious what's the most common engines used over there you use for transplant's or repowers? preference diesel . an of course not to much modification hahahha
cheers ken

Well in authoritarian Britain you have to be a bit of a genius to do an engine upgrade, what with the euro standards .. you cant down grade on that standard- not aloud, its not like the 70's, 80's and early 90's when you could do what you liked, so you'd have to swap the lot from the same euro standard or higher , if your transit came with a dpf as standard that's what it needs .. any other engine other than standard one that came out of it, would need all the electronic gubbins, modules, plus the exhaust stuff off that one to make it run properly and pass an MOT.. could end up a two year project. think you can do what you like on anything before euro 1 1991.`mk3's and below?

there is a modifications forum here

Most here just replace with a reconditioned engine, the biggest problem is finding a good one. Often they’re sold as reconditioned but have had not much other than a jet wash and a dust of rattle can paint.

Often not a bad idea to find a good known running van and take the engine out. I dont mean a neighbours  but from one being broke for parts or scrap.

Id love to put a big v8 petrol in mine !

Cheers

ok
Thanks for the info. Yes there are bringing new laws in here now to regarding engine swap but just thought Id throw it out there to if for someone had come across some thing brilliant that may have worked with out to much trouble.
Problem in changing to late stuff there's to much electronic sh*t to go wrong. one just has to look up forums that cover these late models 90% of the time is electronic sh*t that created problems.
Anyway thanks for the heads up.

if you search for puma defender engine swaps there's a kit for the M57 to mt82 gearbox and a loom available, either in stand alone or intergrated, currently out of stock but iIIRC there are others out ther that do the kits, ashcroft gearboxes (?) did a transit swap on YT but not a lot about for transit just defenders (same engine and box )
