Help! No Oil Pressure Problem!

Postby peterguk » Sun Mar 01, 2026 12:39 pm

Transit 2.4 RWD. High mileage but well maintained and used daily.

Timing cover starting to weep at the bottom, and owner wanted it changing. Removed parts as necessary, removed timing cover. Drained oil and removed sump to ensure we could remove all the bits of gasket material.

Fitted new cover, refitted sump. Left for 24 hours to cure. Filled with oil, cranked and oil pressure light won't go out. Removed banjo bolt into turbo and after lots of cranking no oil from turbo supply hose and oil light permanently on.

Drained oil, removed sump. Rotated crank and checked oil pump shafts/gears rotating. Pump gears were not wet with oil. Refitted. Filled with more oil. Same.

WTF? I've NEVER had this before!!!

a while back i posted about this ..but i was dismissed as an idiot

there are reports on the net of certain ford oil pumps in certain engines .. not self priming and a "ten minute rule"

google .. it does not say 2.4's in the results, but i suspect the same oil pump

google - "ford oil pump ten minute rule"

if this has happened you need to find some way to prime it .. .. i don't know -- through the oil pressure switch hole? to maybe sort it.

A couple of tries before the oil lamp goes out.

On the 2.2 is a banjo on the rhs to the front of the block - this could give access to the oil supply to the turbo - to the discharge side of the pump.
Some pumps need a head - that is a volume of oil to the suction side or a volume of oil in the disccharge side before they'll pump.

Useing the banjo as an access point a tube funnel etc would need to be made - that suites the job to be done -.
It may be possible using an oil can squirter to get sufficient oil into that discharge side of that part of the system.
