mk7 starting problems.

Postby Transit Paul » Tue Mar 03, 2026 1:53 pm

Hi peeps, I am having trouble starting a transit mk7, it does not crank over but if you take the battery lead off and put it back on again it starts first turn, however you cannot switch it off again unless you disconnect the battery, It gives the impression of what a stuck relay would do, any ideas of what I should be looking for would be a great help.

Normally when you post a good idea to put the details in fwd rwd year engine size

then i could have lead you strait to to the owners manual - where there are details of fuses and relays

as it is .. this is as near as i can get you to it

Have you checked for any codes since the problem started?

Sorry, but I am new on here and I need to settle in, it's a 115 T350 2.4 RWD. I haven't got a code reader so I would have to get it plugged in, however I do think that it's electrical & was wondering if anybody had come across this odd fault before.

again no date given

so this is as close as it gets
https://www.ford.co.uk/support/vehicle/ ... er-manuals

find fuses and relays section

it will be the engine compartment fuse box// possibly relay R4 - starter enable

i say possibly because, I've just picked random manual and maybe not the correct date, don't want you willy nilly buying one .. test by substitution

also starter solenoid may be your second cause

If twin batteries, there also this big relay that swaps between them .. i'm not up to scratch on workings of that or how it would effect things, .. but others guys here will explain about it, it's, i think in the battery compartment or near it .. and it's the first fuse/relay box at the top of the list in the manual.

Put a new switch unit on the starter key - lots of posts re doing it.
Could be relay as you suggest.

Hi peeps, just a quick update for everyone, it was the ignition switch that was faulty, fitted a new ignition block and away it went, thanks for the help, regards Paul.
