propshaft refitting question

Postby marc1234567 » Sun Mar 15, 2026 5:07 pm

2002 2.4 rwd chassi cab luton

i did make marks on both ends by the differential and the gearbox.

my 3 piece fits together with 2 keyed spline so the propshaft can only be put together one way.

but when it is refitted , is it possible that either the gearbox donut part or the diff end matters?

like i say i have marked anyway but was wondering just in case it had been put together incorrectly before somehow.

As long as all the UJs are in line the diff and gearbox ends don't matter.

Thanks again. Good to know. The fact the splines have a key means the pj's can only be one way.

Have new uni joints been fitted..?? If so, it will need re-balancing, they can vibrate horribly if not balanced correctly.

The part that attaches to diff had to be replaced.

I'm afraid, your lordship, I'd have to dispute the need for balancing after just replacing a UJ.

I've never had an issue with balance after replacing UJs or when shortening and making shafts for the 4x4 vans.
As long as they spin up full speed in the lathe without it walking across the workshop I count that as good

Local professional prop shop doesn't balance anything when they rebuild shafts.

Biggest cause of imbalance is incorrect reassembly.

The part that attaches to diff had to be replaced.[/quote]You're lucky as the Mk7 & Mk8 props don't have master spline and the UJs are staked in place (rather than using circlips to hold the caps in) and heard of folk refusing to replace that type.
