Starting problem after fuel filter change MK6

Postby firewalker » Thu Mar 26, 2026 6:22 pm

Mk 6 2002 LWB 2.4

Changed the fuel filter today and now it doesn't fire up on the turn of the key like it used to.

Once running then switched off again it starts up with no effort as it should. Leave it for a couple of hours and it's a long time cranking over again.
Seems like the longer you leave it the longer the starter motor has to crank over before it fires up.

I thought I'd primed the new filter with the plunger but it didn't start, so I took it back out and put some diesel in which got me to this stage.

Any of you gurus any ideas what could be causing it or any fix suggestions?

There is air entering the system somewhere and causing the fuel to leak back.
I’m not familiar with your specific engine but I remember reading somewhere on here about different fuel lines which cured the issue.

is it a propper ford filter ? aftermarket filters are known to not seal propperly and let air in :?:

it's a MANN filter, I fitted one of these last time with no hiccups.

Will take it off and try again after filling with diesel and getting any bubbles out.

I'm thinking now I should have made sure the new filter was filled with diesel.
1st fit I didn't put any fuel in it as I thought the primer pump on top of the housing would do that - wouldn't start.
2nd fit I tipped some of the fuel from the old filter into the new one, which got it going after a while but still not starting up on the turn of the key.

Ive had a few that were absolute bstds to start, i made up hose with a grenade type hand primer in it out of an old fiesta tdci pipe set to prime the filter but as i say they do like to let in air, make sure the filter is turned all the way and seating fully but once air is in they can be a frikken PITA, good luck :D

Cheers for the feedback.
Today I took the filter back off and filled it to the brim with diesel, tapped it which brought a few bubbles up,, let it settle then topped up again and refitted it.
Didn't take long to fire up, left it an hour and fired straight up again :D - gerrin!!!
Didn't feel it lock or anything so checked for any dribbles, seems ok.

I think the trick is to fill the b****** 'til it's overflowing!!!

Always fill the new filter with nice clean diesel (never the stuff from out of the old filter as you may just transfer all the crud that filter had been preventing reaching your engine). Few of the Mk6 onwards Transit's have a fuel primer. The small yellow plunger is not a primer, it's for testing the flow through the filter to see if you need to replace it. Does sound like the filter was not sealing properly and allowing air ingress when switched off. Mann filters are good, but after listening to good advice on this forum I would only ever buy a genuine Ford one (especially for a TDCI engine).

Hope you're sorted now.

Thanks for the good advice.
I made the mistake of tipping diesel from the old filter into the new one first time but hopefully not caused any problems. My thinking is that if any crap was in there it would still be filtered by the new filter. I also didn't fill it to the brim so I think that is where the airlock came from.

I tipped that old fuel out and started again with fresh clean diesel and filled it up completely first, seems ok now.

Mine's 2002 and there is a plunger on top of the housing as well as the yellow vial thing to the side of it. Doesn't seem to do anything though!
