Power steering pump: O-ring confusion

Vans a mk6 FWD. my brother was fitting my new PAS pump and when he spotted this O-ring on the shaft in the picture, just behind the teeth in that recess. Now he's not sure if it was on there originally and wants replacing, or if it slipped out of the old pump when he pulled it off.

Ive emailed the supplier of the new recon Ford pump but just in case anyone here has any idea, i need it sorting ASAP and I dont want to have no O-ring nor double O-rings if you catch my drift

Cheers

The O-ring does indeed go in the recess on the water pump shaft..

Looks good to me but whats throwing me off is that Google suggests that specific ford o-ring should be

"The Genuine Ford O-ring with Finis code 1120684 has the following dimensions:Inside Diameter (ID): \(\approx 6.75 \text{ mm}\)Cross-Section (Thickness): \(\approx 1.78 \text{ mm}\

Pretty stressed as I need this sorted urgently. This o ring looks nearly the same size as the original but it doesnt sit tight at all.

Im wondering if thw original was warped/expanded over the years. Either way were banging it in with this o ring ans hoping for the best. If anyone as any final advice please send i will be checking this as we do it

I really dont want to do this wrong but I need the van enough to risk it

I wouldn't stress too much about it...the spline you see is just the water pump drive spline...both the water pump and power steering pump are sealed from each other, the O-ring is mainly to help keep crap out of the spline drive, make sure you put a goodly amount of grease on the spline when refitting.
