Does a faulty immobiliser allow you to crank the engine?

Postby AlexPGA1992 » Fri Apr 03, 2026 9:27 am

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone knows, if there is a fault with the immobiliser on MK6 2.4 does it allow the engine to crank but not fire up? Or does it stop the engine from cranking completely?

Thanks

I suppose it would depend on what the fault is, but if you try and start with the wrong key (for example) it won't crank, and the red LED will flash furiously.

I have no crank or fire, but full working electrics with the key. The red triangle immobiliser light, seems fine on the first key turn, but on subsequent turns the light will flash like the clappers.

A rapidly flashing, or solid,
PATS immobiliser LED on a MK6 (2000–2006) 2.4 Ford Transit typically indicates a failed key recognition (transponder issue), low battery voltage, or a faulty transceiver coil. Troubleshooting steps include trying a spare key, checking fuse 34 (interior panel), or disconnecting the battery to reset the system

AI Overview
A MK6 2.4 Ford Transit (2000–2006) immobilizer preventing the engine from cranking—often accompanied by a rapidly flashing red light on the dash—is
frequently caused by a lost key code, faulty transponder, power supply issue, or system communication failure. Unlike issues where the engine cranks but won't start, a no-crank immobilizer issue usually means the ECU is not releasing the starter circuit.

Cheers, we have the PCM not communicating with the PATS and the fuel pump malfunction DTCs to boot. This is an ongoing issue, we are checking the wiring under starter which is a common fault but still non the wiser.

Faulty or broken wiring is more likely on a 2.0 FWD, due to the wiring being bent around the front of the engine, but probably worth checking anyway, on a RWD. The wires are often broken internally, so it's hard to see from a visual inspection.

For what it's worth i have had temperamental starting for a long time, drives me nuts!
All dash lights working just no crank - silence, can take a number of turns then it just kicks in.
Have replaced relays, ignition switch and receiver ring with no luck.
I only have one key, a new one was £stupid amount and no guarantee it's the problem so living with it but it's getting gradually worse.

I have a new barrel with 2 keys to try, was only about £8 off ebay. No transponder with them though so will have to put the old key on the key ring to send the signal.
If it's a worn key or barrel that should fix it. If the problem is a failing transponder (unlikely apparently) it'll need a new key at about £160!
Watch this space!

Replaced the transponder ring, ignition switch, relays and the barrel - no result.
Speculating it might be an earth problem now.

The chip in the key was the problem, age related. New key programmed and all good.
