Hi guys,

I had a go at trying to removecthe engine on my 2012 euro 5 rwd jumbo today.....and failed miserably!

I've got everything loose and ready to go, or so I thought, but there is not enough room to get the crane in, and there appears to be no lift point on the rear of the block?

Do you have to drop the subframe to get the engine and box out? It's not a option to remove front scuttle as that appears to be seamed on? Is there any way to remove it without dropping the subframe as I'm doing it kerbside and would be an absolute nightmare....even more than it's turning into now. Would I be able to get the crane in if I pull the head off it 1st?

Best removing engine subframe/cradle otherwise you have to lift it a fair bit get it over the engine mounts. Just be wary that the bolts will be tight and rusty at that age if they haven't been out before.

Lifting points are a PITA on these and yes there's nothing at the back.
Best to put a ratchet strap around the engine mounts or the whole engine.
Throw away the hook on your crane to get closer to the engine and strap over the crane arm make sure you use a bolt or something to stop the straps sliding off.

I ended up making a trolley to sit the engine on when pulling them out but that's because I done enough of them to know a std engine crane doesn't work.

Yes, that's basically the order I do it in, lift till you see the weight just off the engine mounts, then drop the cradle.
Just make sure you have some way to stop the engine tipping back or forward depending how your main lifting strap is fixed.

Crane did not fit with hook/chain traveller.
Not the best way to do it but it worked.
On the gearbox are two ferals which possibly combined with the splines on the drive shaft make it necessary to pull the engine away from the gearbox without the engine being moved too high, low, side to side.
Better to use the crane on level smooth concrete. You'll likely find you cannot prevent it going with gravity. The crane goes in the sum of the directions of its wheels. I dug a shallow trench to get under and a level area to have the crane on used shuttering ply to cover the ground and provide a reasonable level smooth area. Had the van on planks on top of the raised ridged soil and had ply under the van to slide on. Better to remove the front X member. As can be seen in image it was a jury rig.
Later to put the rec eng in cut away the end of the crane arm to make a hook type end and get it further in. Used different method to get the eng in.

What happens when you are going to put it back in?
Are you going to refit the block then head or refit fully built?

As in the top pic if you strap over the top then you can get a lot closer to the engine.

Was going to refit the block, then the head. A few people have mentioned a forklift or pallet truck and leave the crossmember in situ? Gonna assess tomorrow to see if i could lower it down and then pull it out with a motorbike lift?

At the back of the head is the vacuum pump it is bolted to the top and bottom parts of the head. There are 4 screws holding the vacuum pump cover on one is behind the EGR cooler pipe. The EGR is bolted to the exhaust and to the head and maybe the block. Getting in/out number 4 injector is very difficult with the engine in the compartment. You may need to cut it's seat which could be done when the head is away from the compartment. Getting at things at the back of the engine whilst it is in the compartment is very difficult.

your nit modifying the engine lift your just not using the hook just put strap over the lifting arm itself like in Airthies picture
