Engine not firing up after a drive of 20 minutes

Postby Dandyd » Sat Aug 22, 2026 1:39 pm

Mk 7 2.2 diesel
After a 20 minute plus drive the engine just turns without firing
I have to wait a while for things to "cool down" , or I press the clutch 3 times
(I was suggested this to get water out) But it works to some extent.

My question is.... Does anyone have any idea why it's doing this?

No idea .. there are a lot of faults with transits that do just what you are saying, the solution is often long and drawn out and sometimes there isn't one and the thread just goes away.

They will probably start off by telling you to check the fuel filter isnt leaking air into it

Then there is or is not, depending on year, an in tank fuel pump, these begin to jam intermittently after a few years. when they do bash the tank with a big rubber mallet as a temporary fix.

Or according to poster here FRAG the other day ... if it has an in tank pump .
"Likely the fuse terminals that feed the fuel pump relay, need closing up.
Common fault,"

Will probably be your starter motor not happy. Possibly full of carbon dust/deposits, when the starter is hot it causes high current draw during starting, leaving very little power to run all the fuel system electrics, which causes intermittent poor starting when hot. Remove the starter, give it a good cleanout, clean up the armature segments, replace the brushes or replace the whole starter.
