02 2l injector seal replacement

Postby Madeinengland73 » Thu Aug 20, 2026 5:27 pm

Hi all would appreciate some advice regarding my van it has just failed the mot stating "major defect fuel system component leaking" it appears one of my injector seals is leaking a small amount you can hardly see when running bit a fail is a fail, so is it an easy job to do ? And if i can't do it how much should i be looking at for the mechanic to do also I'm guessing it would make sense to replace all 4 or not ?

Thanks in advance Baz

Wouldn't hurt to do all of them...they are 24 years old now and the rubber seals will probably have gone hard...injectors have to come out to do it. Mk6 injectors are screwed in and there is a special tool to do it, some people get away without it.

Many mechanics workshops tend not to want to work on older vehicles, some won't even work on vehicles more than 10 years old. No idea what they will charge if you can find someone to do it...I'm in Australia.

Thanks for reply mate yes i think your right about older vans and garages, anyway yesterday i cleaned it all up with gunk and went for a fairly long drive and checked no sign of a leak the van has 77000 miles on it just so you know it's not one that's been round the world, so i went back to garage and asked him to show me the leak he said it must of looked dirty at the mot which yes it was but not sure how that fails as a major leak and he still said he could smell diesel whilst looking under my bonnet when all i could smell and did for the whole drive was gunk... Anyway it's booked in Monday for retest and a pass

Can anyone tell me why finding a decent honest mechanic is so rare?

Because most mechanics workshops are run by people who just want your money and don't really care about you or your van..

There are "some" good ones out there though.

Many of the workshops have mechanics who are too young or don't know how to be a proper mechanic like we used to have in the 60's, 70's, 80's & 90's etc...these days they just plug into a computer, guess and replace things, proper diagnosis is a thing of the past. Finding good parts for these old machines is an issue too.

Yea makes my piss boil they get loads of work and earn decent and even if my injector had a slight leak it certainly isn't a major fail

I spent enough on welding the ol girl recently and don't need this chancer trying his luck, makes me want to drive by one night with the catapult and give him some stress
