EGR and few other bits

Postby chrisuk » Sat Jan 28, 2006 2:51 pm

Doing this long trip has got me thinking about doing the buypass on the EGR, after all from what I read I'll gain a bit more power and use less fuel which isnt a bad thing, along with not pumping back in nasty carbon bits into the engine, would I be wise to do this

Also I know some dont like the idea but Im thinking about taking around 70 liters of red diesel to use once I get into France, diesel costs more in France than here and they dont have red diesel like we do, I guess if Im stopped and it is found I can say its for heating in the Caravan and lastly I want to carry a spare alty just in case, do you know where I can get a good 2nd hand unit from or what other van uses the same alty, failing that does anyone know the bearing specs for the alty, I'd hate to go halfway and the bearings fail on it, at least having loads of tools I'll be able to carry out my own repairs

The EGR you talk about is on the Mk5, as for the red diesel there's nothing wrong with carrying it so that isn't a problem!

The EGR is fitted the Mk5 transit and you have a Mk6, so it runs a different system I think!

Other bits

What makes you think diesel is dearer in France ?
Yesterday near Calais it was 1.15 Euros per litre,
that works out about 78pence, just over the border in Belgium
it was 1.07 Euros which is 73 pence, and its even cheaper in Luxembourg December 15th I went through and it was 91 cents which is 62 pence.
Luxembourg is cheaper than Belgium for fags & baccy too !
I got a little black book with me poems in

Diesel in Europe

Postby Terry » Sun Jan 29, 2006 11:07 pm

Yesterday I arrived back from collecting a caravan from a dealer in Germany, this post got me thinking abaout diesel prices in Germany.
I took a photo of the caravan on a garage forecourt and the prices were on a display in the background.
When I enlarged the piccy, what was at the top ?
Bio diesel at 1.019 cents per litre, Diesel next at 1.109
per litre

So what, this partially answers ChrisUK's query about diesel in Europe, and the 'rapeseed oil' use, just claim you bought 'biodiesel' abroad. !

Interesting Terry, back in June when I was in France Petrol was 1,25 a liter, I see in Spain Diesel is 89~92 EU cents a liter and beers as cheap from 15cents, nice caravan by the way, better and cheaper than the UK I believe, guess thats why you bought it over there, I know a couple who have bought one there for this very reason

Diesel

Sorry to disavow you Chris, but the caravan is not mine
I am not a caravan person (tried once that was enough)
Went over with a friend, he reckoned he saved £3,000
on buying in the U.K., apparently the only problem with
the continental ones is the door is on the wrong side for
British sites !

Yup, diesel is cheaper in Frence than here, but not by much now. I can't see the problem with running your english registered van on red in France, as it the English Customes that have an issue with the tax, the French won't be interested.

No, its not illegal to own a caravan with the door on the "wrong side" Caravans are not considered people carriers, I've bought a oldmint condition one that has been in the UK for 15+ years with the door on the right side.
