timing chain

Postby transitgeoff » Mon Feb 06, 2006 10:07 pm

Hi, todays question is,
how often does the timing chain need to be changed on a 2.4 duratorq, i have had two of these babies in the last month or so with snapped chains and approx 100k miles :D

dont know on a transit but i would think around 100k :?

iveco's are meant to last 350,000km

this seems to be a common failure on high mileage duratorq's maybe because they arent getting the chain replaced on time :? have got a neighbour with a 2.0tdci mondy and its has 116k and a snapped chain :(

There is NO service interval on the duratorq timing chain.

If the chain has failed, you can usually trace it back to poor oil condition causing a loss of pressure to the chain tensioner, from there on the chain gets a little slack and flaps round wearing grooves into the guides as it goes. From there on there is too much slack to take up and it's time for the large lady to do her stuff.

Just a quicky Re the iveco chain, which engine is that?

All the daily range use a belt as primary drive except the 4x4 variant. Current daily only uses a chain to drive the exhaust cam. AFAIK, the cargo and tector and cursor engines are all gear driven motors.

i am only going by what i have seen and that is a engine in bits but it was one of the old 2.8/9? engines we hired one for a week and it was excellent and  nothing vibrated and fell off

here is all the info i can find on the new 3.0 but i think this is belt driven :?

the 166 Hp 3.0 HPT engine (High Performance Turbine), capable of outstanding performance: with a variable geometry turbine, the engine delivers its maximum power between 3,000 and 3,500 rpm, with peak torque of 380 Nm constant between 1,250 and 3,070 rpm.

Timing belt/chain

Postby Terry » Tue Feb 07, 2006 6:44 pm

You will probably find no service interval on that either.
I had this probem with a pinto in a Sierra,
I phoned and asked about the service interval and
was told there wasn't one, so I asked for the workshop
manager and asked IF HE had a 2 litre pinto engined Sierra, when would HE change HIS cambelt, 35,000 miles was the answer.
I got a little black book with me poems in
Pallet Puller

The Zetec, Zetec e and Zetec Se engines all had different belt change intervals ranging from 50 to 100k.

If you want to Pm me with the vehicle details I'll be happy to sort out the interval which applies to yours.

True enough on the old pinto, that never had an interval for change and I knew of a sierra that had done 189k on the original belt, it was replaced after a valve seat fell out

edit to add

The F2 engines fitted in current daily use a belt from crank to inlet cam, the chain drives the exhaust cam from the inlet in the same fashion as the VW/Audi 16 valvers did. :D
