Mk 6 Economy Chip ?

Postby topdogs » Sat Jun 03, 2006 6:14 pm

Is it possible to chip 125psi (fwd) for economy rather than performance ?
If so where can I get one and what results can I expect.
Also any other suggestions, as when you spend £800 per month on fuel any little helps!

If you don't "gas" it to the floor and keep your revs as close to 2000rpm you'll be doing the same job as the "chip" with the advantage that if you did (and you do) come accross a situation where you need to accellerate out of trouble  you can :D

The only chip that can do this is YOU :!:

If you fit a performance chip it could help economy as you may not need to change down when going up hill  But then the 125TDCI I thought was good at this anyway :!:

It may be worth contacting DTUK as I have had a conversation with thier technical guy about this. The module they sell plugs in to the fuel pump and alters its characteristics I will certainly be buying one having looked at the Bluefin which is too expensive and it would take too long to get your money back. So far in an attempt to save on fuel I have done the following all of which are too recent to draw a cut and dry conclusion to. 1 filled up with BP Ultimate diesel. 2 Made sure the air filter was new. 3 Because my viscous fan destroyed itself I am fitting an electric cooling fan. 4 Will change oil to Mobil 1 Turbo diesel. 5 will fit DTUK chip/module.
Now all these things cost money and I guess you could argue that if we drove a little more carefully through the gears carefully changing up quicker savings could be made I have been driving my 90 T350 at 10, 20, 30, 40 through the gears it doesn't seem to labour and I have filled it to the brim in order to get a consumption figure.

I tried to go for the Bluefin but unfortunately it was not compatible with my van :( I know it was extremely expensive but I do believe you get what you pay for :!:
Being expensive means you look at it in more depth as to why :!: :?:

I found that you can "chip" your van without making any connections as it simply plugs into the diagnostic socket :D So there's no messy modules :D

Then if you don't want someone else to drive it while it's modded or it has to go into a garage for servicing you can "dechip" it just as easily :D

You can also completely imobilize the ECU so it won't start :D

And the ultimate is  It will read and clear yours and others fault codes  :!: BRILLIANT :!: :!: :D :D :D

Expensive but worth it :D

Yes I agree the Bluefin has many options on it. But I was restricted to the basic model because of my type of van a 2001 90 T350 and after talking to the guy at DTUK and reading the feedback etc I decided to save well over £250 and go for the DTUK unit when I eventually buy one I am still looking at specs and checking feedback of all units on the market. Now the TDCI van in question has many more options including economy mode etc with the DTUK model and again it is considerably cheaper. I absolutely agree that you get what you pay for.

Ive just been on Halfords website, they have a oil match page that gives you the best oil for your model van. Gotta be worth a try.

Thanks for the info guys I will be looking at all your suggestions. I know what you say about keeping your foot off the gas but even at my age (52) I cant resist chasing down lanes after Boy Racers!
I am getting rid of my present Tourneo and hope to get a good deal on a new Mk6 because the Mk 7 wont be out until Oct I am told.
By the way do you think £4000 is a resonable price to ask for a 52 plate Tourneo with 260K on the clock?

Hi Shaun,

Drive train & Suspension :
Clutch at 48k ( Big argument about ware & tear with Main Dealer) Replacement clutch is still fine after 212K !!!!!!!!!
Only other thing apart from service items ( eg brakes etc) : One front wheel bearing at 150k !

Engine : turbo replaced at 214k ( shouldn't of listened to the expert who said ignore the noise! ) as it damaged a conrod which could of been avoided.

Electrical : couple of wiring problems on fan and lights.

Bus still running sweet and using no oil.

I would buy another because for the high spec and comfort, they are a bargain ( My passengers tell me ts far better to ride in than the Merc! )

Hope this helps

ive got a 2000 90ps 350 lwb hi roof its got 273k on it,so far ive had
2 alternatiors, the first whent with age at 180k,the second cuz the wires on the plug corroded and this shorts the unit
starter motor as the AA patrol man burnt it out(very nice man)they paid for it.
fuel pump seals@180k
water hose replaced as they rub together
replace cluth at 210k,this is the main bugbare i have with the tranny as there seems to be no play in the pedal theres around half inch from the top as you let the clutch out.l
i think there pretty bullet proof as a kid down the road was a mobile tyre fitter a he used to cain his from cold, started it up and floored it,well company van innit!
