No, it's an overheated clutch that kills the damping system within the flywheel in the first instance.

The flywheels do fail in other manners, but those failures don't take out the clutch. Failure of the spacing washer between the 2 masses would be one example. That allows the rivet heads on the back of one of the masses to contact the other and formulate a metal dust. The dust goes onto jam the starter

so what is the life of these items - with a proper driver and not overloaded van- but loaded up to the allowed load?
There must be a common 'average' .
i always reckon on 100K for a clutch, but I never had one of these 'throw-away' flywheel money-spinners for FMC.

hardly a throw away money spinner, FMC warranty end up paying for most of the failures.

I really dont see how you could anticipate the lifespan of something like that.

It would depend entirely on so many factors outside the bus and its payload. Is it a motorway vehicle/town vehicle? If town, is it a hilly one? Are the streets narrow and thus necessitating it to stop more often still? etc

The old Smiley Transit from my work was on 150,000 when sold and still afaik, had its original clutch Also, I got a 106 that withstood 150,000 miles on its factory clutch - but 80,000 of that was predominantly motorway mileage. Whereas, Ive known of failure from anywhere around 18K upwards!

It is my understanding that all dealers have to ask the customer for authorisition before carrying out any repairs which are chargeable to the customer, if they didn't inform you of what the cost to you would be before carrying out the repairs then I would refuse to pay the bill, as it was your understanding that it would be covered by the warranty and you were not expecting a bill. As others have said the clutch is a wear item and thus only has a limited mileage cover, on most cars this is 9000 miles or 12 months am not sure what fords commercial policy is on this one. It sounds to me from your description that you have suffered a collapse of the clutch pressure plate and this would suggest to me a faulty part so I would take it up with them again.

yuo saying about clutch life my luton mk3 has now done about 80000 miles on 1 clutch with still life in it but the ldv speclift with the transit engine in has done about 40000 miles on 1 clutch just due to the type of work involved..

How do you explain that I got only 48K out of my first clutch in a Mk6 FWD and that I am still going strong with over 200K on the replacement clutch ?
I dont think my driving style has changed that much !

im on 45k miles on my swb fwd with over 200 bhp from the mods ive done and the clutch is still superb i use the van round town in a hilly area but i dont carry to much weight, i think ive done really well but it a puzzle why some clutches havent lasted when you would think they were made to a certain spec.mine seems to take the abuse and its gotta get more than most so why do some fail sooner??

I only smell clutch burning when reversing up hill with a fully loaded van. Mines a rear wheel drive.

the 04 plate tranny i drive clutch is on its last legs it rattles very badly and the pedal is very very near the top. The van has done 70000 abused miles and quite a few burnouts
