EGR gubbins

Postby fastmower » Fri Aug 11, 2006 8:29 pm

Can someone clever give me a quick run-down on the EGR system?
My truck is a 51 plate 2.4 90PS. I've searched EGR in this section of the forum but not found a deal.

Basically - what's it for?
How does it work?
What happens if it's removed?
Is removing/disabling it a good or bad idea?

Is it the cylinder attached to the rod on the top of the unit in this pic here:

Thanks in advance!

The EGR is exhaust recycling and it is used to feed exhaust gases back into the engine to reduce emissions

It is a valve between the intake and exhaust manifold and is vaccume operated and i guess it has a sensor for the ECU

If it is removed the ECU will give an error code and probably go into limp home

Dont think you can remove it on the MK6

The cylinder in the pic is the turbo wastegate actuator which controlls the boost pressure by opening a valve in the exhaust side of the turbo. when it opens it allowes gas to bypass the turbo therefore lowering boost

Hope this helps :D
