Mk7 Alloys

Postby Azer van man » Thu Mar 29, 2007 10:21 pm

just a quick note ,if when buying a mk7 with alloys be careful when fitting the spare (non alloy) ,I had a nail in tyre yesterday so had to put spare on this is when the problem arose , because the spare is steel and thinner than the alloy the bolts become a slight bit longer therefore it breaks the end of the wheel nut when torquing them up the bolt comes through the end, I was not happy spoke to my local stealer today and they have not come across the problem yet so i'm awaiting phone call to see how they suppose to deal with the problem

do you not get 4 bolts to fit in a little box with the van when you buy it, (usually to replace the locking nuts) ?

No all i got was the locking nut remover, i said to the local stealer that they should of supplied spacers or something like that cos what i'll have to do now if they replace them is keep the damaged ones so it dont happen again :?

What you need is a set of nuts from a MK5 steel wheel as the stud will go through the nut with no damage, assuming they are the same thread. If not the same thread, then you need that 'type' of nut but with the correct thread.

Ok well I did think I had read about the threads being different, it was the 'style' of nut I was getting at as afterall you can get alloy wheel nuts with the collar that allow the stud to go through but are meant for alloys with a covering centre cap.

the nuts on the fives are different to the sixes and sevens - larger threads and they don't have taper seats, they're flat because the wheels on these locate on the hub centre like a lorry

just get some standard steel wheel nuts and the studs will go through the hole without causing a problem
