Is the fuel filter full ?

Have you got diagnostics to check for codes and fuel rail pressure?

Does it stay running on sniff or does it cut back out ?

I have not checked if fuel filter is full I will have look and it’s not giving any codes. Once it’s running it stays running and drives fine.

Start by checking filter is full, when at fault.. if its not full fill with fresh diesel and try again. Can take a couple of fills sometimes.

Id be checking what your rail pressure is while cranking, when at fault 300 bar it should be. Do you have live data function
On your equipment?

I have no way of checking fuel pressure with my diagnostics tool so I would have to get it booked in and I checked fuel filter and it was full. Thanks for replying back.

You can probably rule out air ingress then…

Could really do with checking for any codes and live rail pressure

Have you got a windows laptop ?

You can download the forscan diagnostic for free and get a cheap 30 quid obd adapter online. Best equipment for our vans.

Yeah I have just ordered forscan and adapter of eBay now.

Last time I had this issue it was starter motor so when it started doing it again 1st thing I done was get starter motor changed over as it was still under warranty but it was still the same after changing and I can’t see it being bad starter being new.

Yes often starters play up when hot, the heat from the engine when hot. They pull silly loads and often show up when hot when worn… fact yours runs on sniff certainly points towards fueling… definitely start with cranking rail pressure bud, SY diagnostics on youtube for the setting the v linker up is helpful. Shows how to do it all.

If the fuel filter is emptying, you have air ingress, either at the filter head or downstream of it towards the engine. Hard to start when hot is usually the starter motor not happy....fairly common.

When was the fuel filter last replaced..?? When were the learns last done..??

What code reader was used..?? Most of them can't cope with the Transit protocols. Forscan will get you sorted.

Was filter emptying before replacing it with an alternative or not ? Did you check the other day when i mentioned it ?

Cheap filters can fail to seal well if not a decent brand.. ie ford, mann or bosch.

Check filter housing for cracks with a torch etc..

Injector leak off pipe seals (little green ones) are a common area.

All pipeline connections/ make sure nothing has rubbed/ worn a pinhole through. Any of the low pressure pipes.

Most definitely air ingress confirmed then..

Check the bits mentioned previously and hopefully your find it with out much bother…

Being under Vacumn, fuel wont leak but air will get in. So can be a mare sometimes..
