Slot on Mk7 dashboard

Just a random question that I've always wondered and never worked out. Whats that slot for on the dash just under the radio?

I just put my fuel receipts in it, seems a funny place for a fuel card, like putting your credit cards in the windscreen.

if you look in the handbook it's described as a ticket slot

We use it for toll tickets on French motorways.
