New keyfob cheaper repair

Postby altern8 » Wed Feb 17, 2010 9:35 pm

Thought I'd mention this, someone may find it useful.

I paid £30 for a new remote keyfob of ebay only to find out the new ones HAVE to be programmed by a dealer - mine wanted £45! So I carried on using the manual key :(

A few weeks ago my wife wanted me to fit a new battery to her watch,  Battery in the remote? it's worth a try. Out came the penknife & soldering iron! 10 minutes later job done!!!

Carefully prise open the old & new fobs - unsolder the new & old batteries (it's only 2 solder points) stick the new one in the old fob, go outside & test - hurrah! lights flash, doors open, result :D

Bostik the fob back together.

Of course you could just have a duff fob, but if it's only a few years old & not been dropped in a pint it should still be ok!

Cheers all

There is a recall on MK7 keyfobs, you could have had a new one for nothing from your dealer :?

Never heard about recall but it's done now anyway, and I'd already bought the new fob because mine was very distressed! I don't think they'd have accepted mine for replacement.

There may still be people who don't have the option to get a freebee replacement.

Any idea what that is for? Mine have been OK too. I hope Ford hasn't caught Toyota sickness!

It wasn't a recall as such, it a customer complaint replacement basis for key not changing. Your van as at the age where you should have the new style already.

If anyone has a damaged key fob, I bought a new casing for £14 on the following site. Transferred the internals from old to new and it works a treat.

They would reuse the blade of the key and give you a new remote, and retain the old one. They will only replace it if it test out as being faulty, and your van is listed as having the problem keys
