Well we have now had both rear wheel bearings replaced £ 300

Some oil has been put in the differencial and needs to 'work in'

The noise (which sounds like a wheel bearing is going) is still there.

The van is 2007 and has only done 20,000.

I think you needs to check rear differential bearings not a fheel bearings.

Thanks we did a 300 mile run with the 'oil in the differencial' and whilst not getting too excited it does sound a bit quieter we will do another run this week.
If this 'works' is it only a temporary fix?
How much are differncial bearings?

UPDATE
WELL £550 spent so far on one front and two rear wheelbearings and oil in differencial.

No improvement.

nephew a truck mechanic trained bt Mercedes took it to his garage.

Apparently (and Im NOT a mechanic) on the rear axle ther is a pipe which stops water getting in, This was not fitted properly and water had got in to the half shaft bearings which had rusted and pitted shedding bits in to the differencial and in to the new rear wheel bearings.

Ford want £1200 for new bearing which we are hoping to source cheaper

Luke has managed to clean up the rear wheel bearings and the differencial so tomorrow husband is off to try to source new half shaft bearings.

The diff breather pipe commonly falls out of its clip, an eventually falls of completely if not refixed in time

Hi I am a bit late with this info, jack up one side of vehicle and secure on axle stand. Now try pulling wheel towards you then push away, do this a couple of times if wheel moves then wheel bearing is at fault. Do the same on other wheel, if nothing then whilst on axle stand chalk wheels front and rear. With rear wheel clear of ground start engine select 1st gear release handbrake and slowly bring up clutch apply light pressure to gas pedal and drive as normal listen for noise if it whines it is diff.
Carry out same on other side, remember weight on axle stand and other wheels chalked repeat operation.

You did check diff oil level first!
