After quite a bit of cranking it fires up with full throttle only and revs to just over 500 rpm and cuts out after a few seconds of labouring. Now there's lots of smoke as well.

Replacing an EGR is within my skillset so I could tow it home and save myself the labour but there's more than one aftermarket option available and from the online pictures they all look the same and most say they are compatible but are they? Secondly does the ECU or new valve need coding in any way?

A faulty EGR valve will not cause the engine to cut out.
