Thanks for your reply…

The news I was dreading really???
I will try the rubber glove test as I don’t have a pressure tester… I will try a different brand of sniff tester to see if that gives a positive result…

Then I will have to strip it all down and get the head skimmed or a new one if cracked.

Out of interest does anyone know roughly how much for a head skim

It’s a shame as otherwise the van is running sweet, it is a converted camper so only has light use really.

Thanks

Thanks

Will check this
I will try a new thermostat just in case (as i would replace if the head needs to come off anyway)
Out of interest with the excess pressure in the system, would or should the coolant cap vent pressure out or not …

It's actually 21psi for the 2.4 Euro-4 engines.

Yes sorry, didn’t notice the psi on the drawing- getting old eye sight not what it was :D

Thanks for the info chaps as always

I will try a new stat and cap and give the system a good flush out at the weekend, then take it for a blast up the motorway then check to see if the hoses and tank are still pressurised when cold , if they are I will get the head off
And have a pressure test done
Will report back when I have some news…
Bit busy at work this time of year, so it will probably be a couple of weeks until I can get the head off…

Bet its going to be different all over the country , but according to google AI its £60 - £100

and you never trust them on cleaning afterwords .. make sure its spotless yourself by doing the cleaning in the galleries etc.

and it may not be as simple as you think

You may need to buy extra thick gaskets afterwards, because the valves are almost flush with the head face, tools needed to measure etc .. piston protrusion etc to calculate gasket thickness original had notches in it to indicate its thickness.

With the info above AND BELOW .. by When the time comes, you'll be clued up and not make mistakes

Dial indicator with stand - cheapest i could find

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/227368745960?

The gasket thickness is with notches - ford call it tooth

part numbers

1349874 1 notch thinnest
1349875 2 notch thicker
1349876 3 notch even thicker

That's all ford OEM go up to

See this one .. 4 notches -/ teeth can be clearly seen NOTE LINK FOR ILLUSTRATION PURPOSES ONLY - NOT YOUR GASKET

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/166351006494?

Sorry, don't know the actual measurement of thickness .. machine shop should advice.
also could have been skimmed before and beyond the point of another skim.. it would make it more work to return to standard after this --re-cut valve seats etc £££

all the best.mark

Thanks Mark for all the info much appreciated…

I did get rough quote from a local machine shop, £120 + vat (south east England prices) more if it needs cleaning??

Not sure on the history of the van, so it may or may not had a skim before

Once I get the head off I will update more ,I will order a dial gauge in anticipation?? Always handy to have anyway…

Thanks
