Timing Chain Replacement

same position here as you .. not done before .. i would not be looking for that hole .. i would be buy the correct tool to lock the timing chain side.

far as i can make out, the hole in the flywheel side is for using with a device that fits into it .. this device looks nothing like a pin that fits into a round hole

and is used for locking the flywheel and NOT timing it, it is used to stop the flywheel turning when undoing crankshaft nut etc.

so buy the correct tool kit that fits the timing chain side.. and do it the correct way

The manual is absolutely useless .. does not even tell you how to use the tool .. just shows a pic of it set up , with no clue how.

The manual is probably the worst thing, as far as helpful is concerned, it isn't, how ford techs get on with it- i don't know .. the dealership guys must just pass the information on from tech to apprentice .. cause you'll never in a million years follow the manual .

oh and the 2.2 defender manual shows no flywheel locking tool and tells you to put in first gear and keep foot on brake whilst someone loosens crankshaft nut!

I have skimmed through this post where is the crank sensor on these? What I am thinking is,if the CS is mounted pointing to the flywheel,perhaps you can chock it once the CS is removed. I perceive that you have removed the starter?

The crank sensor is indeed "pointed" at the flywheel...however, the sensor mounting bracket is quite fragile and cannot be used to lock the flywheel/crankshaft, it's only used to allow correct cam timing setup using the appropriate timing pins. If the bracket is damaged or broken...it's a "gearbox out" job to sort it.

I'm struggling to find the correct place to lock the fly wheel. There is one spot where there is a large gap in the teeth but there is play when the locking tool is in through the crank sensor hole.

Got it all timed up. All put back together. Slight problem there is oil coming out of the "extra" hole at 11 o'clock on the cover. Is something supposed to go in it? I put sealant all the way round it.

SO after a bit of research I've discovered that the 8mm freeze dish shaped welch plug has disappeared and there isn't a new one in the timing kit. That's why the oil is leaking out. You can get a zinc replacement or apparently belt and braces is to clean the hole thoroughly with brake cleaner and a rag and fill with JB Weld. Going to try that tomorrow.
