Turns out i was just being a useless idiot. Happens more often than you think
Because this side had a new hub and bearings. it was stiffer to rotate once fitted on the shaft. This meant when it came to turning the axle to get the splines to line up, it was very hard to get a micro adjustment due to the extra stiffness of new bearings and races etc. The other side only needed a slight wiggle and it slammed in. It was easier to wiggle because it was the old bearings which are worn in.
All i had to do firmly grip the flange and the hub in a way that let me rotate it 0.5mm and it immediately went in. A micro adjustment was all that was needed! I was obviously being too clunky with the wiggling before!
Thanks anyway to everyone who tried to help. I'll see myself out

your one of the few thats came back on to update the result.....mind you a tight new wheelbearing doesn't quite sound healthy
